Gitanes ( French for 'gypsies') is a French brand of cigarettes ; the cigarettes, which have existed since 1910, are manufactured by Altadis . The brand is more widespread in France than in Germany. In 2008, Altadis was acquired by the British Imperial Tobacco Group PLC. As a result, the cigarette is sold in Germany by Reemtsma , which is part of the Imperial Tobacco Group. Since April 2010, cigarettes have been thinner, the pack smaller and the tobacco has a milder composition.

In addition to the conventional form without a filter, there are the following variants:

The designation "Light" has been banned for tobacco products within the EU since September 30, 2003 due to EU case C-491/01. The ECJ already confirmed the ban before it came into force. The former product Gitanes Blondes Lights is now called Gitanes Blanc .

At “Gitanes Maïs” corn paper is used instead of normal cigarette paper, which enhances the already strong (scratchy) taste of the black tobacco used in all Gitanes (only not in the blondes) . This variant may no longer be sold in Germany.

The brand became known to a wider audience through its advertising sponsorship and image establishment of the French Formula 1 team Ligier from 1976 to 1995 . For the same purpose (establishing an image), they also invested in the music sector ( jazz ) and, with the French Universal, released a series of jazz in Paris of around 113 new CD editions.

The name is the French-speaking term for land drivers (formerly known as " Gypsies ").
