Dog zone
A dog zone or dog exercise zone is an area in which dogs are allowed to stay in public spaces without a muzzle and a leash . These are mostly fenced-in areas where dogs can play with their fellow dogs. Especially in densely built-up areas, dog zones are the only places where dogs get enough exercise.
Germany
In Germany there are dog exercise areas or dog exercise areas created by municipalities - mainly in large cities with little open space suitable for dogs . The specific designation depends on state laws or local regulations. In parks, there is often a requirement to leash and dog owners are only able to meet the dogs' need for sufficient exercise to a limited extent. In addition to the public run-off areas, there are privately maintained areas, some of which are chargeable.
Berlin
In Berlin , twelve dog exercise areas have been set up for the over 100,000 registered dogs - the oldest areas have existed for more than 70 years. In addition to the 108,842 animals registered in 2010, there are roughly the same number of unregistered dogs after surveys on dog tax. Dogs can run around freely on a total of around 1250 hectares. Although the Berlin forests are also allowed for walks with dogs, off-leash walking and romping for dogs is officially only allowed in the areas created for this purpose. Due to the inner-city pressure to use, some public parks for dogs are also prohibited. According to the Green Area Act, it is forbidden in public green spaces to let dogs run free and to take them to children's playgrounds, ball playgrounds and sunbathing areas and to bathe in water. Users have to remove their dogs' faeces immediately, otherwise they face a fine of up to 150 euros. A warning fee for dogs that are not leashed outside the dog exercise areas is 25 euros. What is criticized about the Berlin areas is their location away from residential areas, they can usually only be reached by car. For this reason, the Animal Welfare Association offers private dog exercise areas with paddling pools and play equipment, seating for dog owners including a shelter and dog waste bags for an entrance fee. In addition to the private sponsors, the award as a dog run area is the responsibility of the district authorities. Areas in Pankow have been made smaller, in Reinickendorf there are fenced-in areas known as dog gardens with seating, play facilities and waste bag collectors, which are available free of charge. In parks and public green spaces, leash is required almost everywhere, while the run-off areas in the Berlin forests are primarily in the south-west (therefore connected with long approach paths). “The 12 dog exercise areas in the forest - the oldest have existed for more than 70 years - are used intensively. Dogs can run around freely on a total of about 1250 hectares - an offer that does not exist in any German or European city in a similar way. "
Dresden
In Dresden should for the entire Dresdner Heide a leash are introduced. To compensate for this, free-range zones were provided for dogs, in which dog owners could give their dogs a run. For organizational and fiscal reasons, it was not possible to set up open-air areas at the level of the Saxon capital, so that the intended leash constraint was no longer applicable.
Hamburg
The dog ownership in Hamburg is by the Hamburg law on the holding and guiding of dogs ( common name : regulated by 2006 "Dogs Act"). According to this, around 65,000 dogs (as of 2013) outside of private property and the approximately 123 dog exercise zones including dog bathing areas are generally required to be on a leash , unless an obedience test has been taken to free them from the leash. In addition, all dog owners are obliged to have their dog tagged with a microchip , to take out liability insurance and to register in the dog register . The exercise zones are available to the Hamburg dogs with a total area of 238 hectares in parks and green areas.
Austria
In Austria there are basic rules in dog zones, so only dogs that are conspicuous are to be kept on a leash and dog feces are to be removed. Dogs must always be on a leash in parks that are open to the public and on marked storage areas. A muzzle is compulsory, for example, in public transport, in restaurants or at events. But the legal situation is regulated differently in the Austrian federal states. Many dog places are set up on a private initiative with municipal participation if necessary.
Vienna
In Vienna there are one or more dog zones in each district, some of which are equipped with special drinking fountains (dog troughs). In addition, there are seats for dog owners in some dog zones. Dogs can also relieve themselves in it, only the excretion currently has to be removed by the dog owner. Professional dog toilets are being developed that will dispose of what has been eliminated with converted sprinkler nozzles at night.
In 2008 there were 126 designated dog (run-out) zones in Vienna with a total of 897,445 m², with over 52,000 registered dogs. Dogs in the 2nd district have the largest exercise area, whereas in the 4th district there is only 0.5 m² for each registered dog. Each of the 23 districts has at least one dog zone. The smallest dog zone is only 50 m², while the largest is 290,000 m².

Graz
In the provincial capital Graz , dog meadows are preferred , which must be fenced in due to legal requirements so that dogs can run freely without a muzzle or a leash. If the fencing in is not possible for various technical or legal reasons, dog zones are set up, "the main goal of the city is to build more dog meadows in the urban area".
