history

The original street village was founded in 1158 and until 1240 was a princely fiefdom , a farming village surrounded by meadows and water arms. The name Herstetten at that time was derived from " Stätten herent der Donau " ( place this side of the Danube ). In its history the place was often flooded and destroyed in wars. The baroque Hirschstetten Castle was built from 1713 to 1724 . On May 21 and 22, 1809, Hirschstetten was partially destroyed in the battle for Aspern and Essling . However, the lock remained intact. The French ball, built into the outer wall of the former castle chapel, still reminds of what happened today.

After the east railway branches to Marchegg and Laa an der Thaya , which opened in 1870, and after the first Danube regulation (1870 to 1875), many gardeners, farmers and workers settled here. The Hirschstetten Cemetery was consecrated in 1872.

In 1904, the strongly grown Hirschstetten was incorporated into Vienna as part of the new 21st Viennese district, Floridsdorf . In 1938 the district became part of the 22nd district of Groß-Enzersdorf , part of the new Groß-Wien (the Laaer Ostbahn became the district border 21/22). In 1945, Hirschstetten was largely destroyed after a massive air raid. Since 1954 the reduced 22nd district, to which the place still belongs, has been called Donaustadt . In 1954, the border with the 21st district moved from Hirschstetten far to the northwest. The Rautenweg landfill on the northern edge of the district has been in operation since the 1960s and is also its highest point.

traffic

Hirschstetten was served by the steam tramway from June 7, 1886 to January 22, 1922 , which ran from Floridsdorf via Kagran and Hirschstetten to Aspern and Groß-Enzersdorf and drove through the town on Hirschstettner Strasse. From January 23, 1922 to August 30, 1970 tram lines 217 and 317 ran on the route ; they were then replaced by city bus routes.

On May 31, 1980, as part of the expansion of the Vienna S-Bahn, the S80 line, which ran from the south station (east side) , which was demolished in 2010 (gradually replaced by the new Vienna Central Station since 2012 ), to the east station Vienna Erzherzog-Karl-Strasse in Stadlau operated, extended to the stop Wien Hirschstetten (distance from Südbahnhof: 13 km, travel time: 19 minutes). On May 31, 1987 there was a further extension of the S80 on the Marchegger Ostbahn to the Wien Hausfeldstraße stop, which is currently only served by the regional trains that run between Marchegg and Vienna Central Station. S-Bahn services are now offered every 60 minutes. Since the timetable of December 2012, line S80 has been running on the following route: Wien Hütteldorf train station - Wien Meidling train station - Vienna main station - Vienna Matzleinsdorfer Platz - Vienna Simmering - Praterkai - Vienna Stadlau - Erzherzog Karl Straße - Hirschstetten. From Vienna Hirschstetten via the Pottendorfer line to Wiener Neustadt Hbf.

In 1993 the “Südosttangente” A23, a city motorway, was extended from Kaisermühlen to the Hirschstetten exit. From there the “Wiener Nordrand Bundesstrasse” B302 continued northwards; it has been converted to the north edge expressway S2 since 2002 and leveled off in 2009. There are plans to expand the Hirschstetten exit to a junction and to extend the A23 from there to Seestadt Aspern , a large urban expansion project southeast of Hirschstetten.

The palace chapel with its frescoes by Daniel Gran , which was attached to the residence of the palace, was preserved despite the air raid in 1945, and the parish church "Maria Himmelfahrt" was built on the grounds of the former palace.

The Hirschstetten flower gardens with the palm house are well worth seeing . In summer, many residents of the adjacent community settlements relax at the Hirschstetten bathing pond, also known as the Ziegelhof pond. The Coptic Church of the Blessed Virgin of Zeitoun is also nearby . In the south of Hirschstetten is the Evangelical Confessional Church .
