The main entrance is at Quadenstraße 11. While Quadenstraße and Am Friedhof street directly border the cemetery in the north and east, there are still undeveloped lots in the west and south. The Hirschstetten cemetery covers an area of 5,959 square meters and houses 755 grave sites. This makes it the sixth smallest urban cemetery in Vienna.

history

Hirschstetten originally belonged to the parish of Kagran . Therefore, the dead were originally buried in the Kagran parish cemetery. Since the transport of the corpses to Kagran in bad weather and "appeared to be disadvantageous from a medical police point of view" in the event of epidemics , the Hirschstetten community asked the district administration of Groß-Enzersdorf for approval of its own cemetery. The request was granted under the conditions of the construction of a fence and a death chamber. The cemetery was consecrated on April 21, 1872 and was first used in 1878. Previously, the dead continued to be buried in Kagran.

The Hirschstetten cemetery was expanded in 1916 to include adjacent properties. However, since the area around the cemetery was increasingly being built up, a resolution by the municipal council in 1923 provided for the cemetery to be closed soon. The local council maintained its dissolution in 1926, but allowed the use of unoccupied grave sites. The cemetery continued to be used, and in 1928 the grave digger's house was converted into a laying out room. After repair work after the end of the Second World War , the allocation of new and abandoned graves was prohibited in 1952 . In 1953 the Vienna City Council decided to close the Hirschstettner Friedhof and other Viennese cemeteries by 1975. However, the allocation of fallen graves was approved from 1957 to 1965 with the restriction that the right of use would also expire at the end of 1975. In May 1975 the closure of the cemeteries was postponed for ten years, in 1980 a referendum of the Viennese population overturned the law and the Vienna City Council repealed the law in September 1980. The Hirschstettner Friedhof could thus continue to exist.
