Kagran cemetery
The Kagraner Friedhof is a cemetery in the 22nd district of Vienna, Donaustadt .
location
The Kagraner Friedhof is located in the north-west of the Danube city in the Kagran district , at Goldemundweg 11. The cemetery is located in the north by Ferdinand-Stransky-Weg, in the east by Theodor-Kramer-Straße, in the south by green spaces and in the west by a hardware store and whose parking space is limited. The approximately 140 meter long Goldemundweg leads from Wagramer Straße to the cemetery entrance.
history
Originally there was a cemetery around the Kagran parish church . Since some of the surrounding villages such as Stadlau and Hirschstetten also belonged to the Kagran parish, their deceased were also buried in this churchyard. In 1737 there was an extension that was fenced in. A morgue was built in 1811, which was destroyed by an ice rush in 1830 and never rebuilt. In the meantime there was a separate plague cemetery east of the church , which is still remembered today by a plague cross.
Due to the increasing population in Kagran, it was decided to build a new cemetery in the north of the village. This was consecrated on July 3, 1887. The old cemetery was closed, but it wasn't until 1902 that it was closed and turned into a church square. In 1908 the new cemetery was expanded and a chapel was built in 1919. In 1954, 1966 and 1988 further enlargements took place.
In 1966 the old mortuary was replaced by a new building based on a design by Josef Strelec. The funeral room was designed by Erich Boltenstern . A mosaic and a leaded glass window in the entrance area were made by the painter Hermann Bauch . The bronze crucifix was designed by Viktor Hammer.
