history

The church was probably built in the 12th century and was originally dedicated to St. Consecrated to Wendelin . When in 1438 (some sources give an earlier date) the neighboring town of Stadlau and its St. Georg church were destroyed by a flood, Kagran took over the parish rights in Stadlau and the patronage of St. George .

In the middle of the 15th century, Kagran was the main parish for the surrounding villages of Eipeldau , Strebersdorf , Gerasdorf , Deutsch-Wagram , Jedlesee and Jedlersdorf , which, however, over time received their own parishes or were parished elsewhere. The last two parishes to be marked out were Stadlau (1934) and Hirschstetten (1953).

The church can be traced back to the 15th century as a single-nave village church. The Gothic choir was built in 1438 and the nave was extended in 1642 . The core of the tower with the local stone structure is also Gothic, the bell storey and pointed helmet are from the 17th century. The church was devastated in the course of the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683, and it was also badly damaged by two fires in the 18th century.

The cemetery surrounding the church received an extension in 1737, which was fenced in. An ice rush damaged the church in 1830 and destroyed the cemetery morgue built in 1811. The churchyard was closed in 1887 in the course of the construction of the nearby Kagran cemetery , but it was not closed until 1902 and converted into a forecourt.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the parishes of the Resurrection of Christ , Kagraner Anger , Neukagran and St. Christoph am Rennbahnweg were detached from the Kagran parish . On July 17, 1990, the dilapidated organ gallery collapsed after the organ had previously been demolished. Afterwards the church was completely renovated and a new gallery was built and on November 21, 1992 the ceremonial reopening took place. The current pastor has been Georg Pauser since 1989.
