history

Left the extension and right the "old stock"

After the original church in the east of Aspern was destroyed by a devastating flood in 1670, a nave was built on a hill in the west of Aspern on a defensive tower that was owned by the municipality (until 1999). On November 27, 1671, the new church was consecrated to St. Martin. During the Battle of Aspern in 1809, the place changed hands a total of nine times. The church and the square in front of it were the focus of the fighting. The Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal Johann von Hiller was finally forced to set fire to the church, as French snipers repeatedly holed up on the tower . The reconstruction took place from 1810 to 1813. In 1998/99 there was a quarter-circle extension on the west side of the church (architect Franz Claudius Demblin); to do this, the altar had to be moved forward and the listed pulpit moved to the east side of the church.

Furnishing

High altar and side altars

The high altar picture, which shows the Roman captain Martin, was donated by master baker Michael Bauer and created by Ludwig Mayer in 1862 .

The two-part organ was built by Johann Georg Fischer for 2200 guilders and played for the first time in 1813 for the feast of St. Martin.

The ringing consists of four bells weighing between 120 and 620 kilograms. The oldest (180 kg) dates from 1856.

At Easter 2017 a statue of Christ was stolen from the parish church.

Environment of the church

The Lion of Aspern, created in 1858 by Anton Dominik Fernkorn , is located on the church forecourt . The monument commemorates the victims of the Battle of Aspern in 1809. In winter it is enclosed by a wooden hut to protect the sandstone from frost damage.

Also on the church forecourt is the Christ the Risen statue . The statue, erected in 1829, was originally located in the old Aspern cemetery next to the church and was moved to a park at the new location when it was closed and redesigned.

To the north of the church is the Sebastiani Chapel, built in 1670. The special museum Aspern-Essling 1809 has been housed in the small chapel since 1979 as a branch of the Viennese district museums , which provides information about the battle for Aspern in 1809.

On the northern wall of the church, some gravestones from the old cemetery and parts of the former cemetery wall have been preserved.

Church life

The church is the parish church for more than 13,000 Catholics. Sunday services are held in the church at 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
