Sacred Heart Church

The Stadlau parish church Herz Jesu is a Roman Catholic church in the Stadlau district in the 22nd Viennese district of Donaustadt at Gemeindeaugasse 5.

history

The parish has been handed down to us before 1050 and is the mother parish of the Donaustadt district. Around 1130 Stadlau is a patronage of the Diocese of Passau . The church was officially consecrated to St. George around 1160 and 1190. After being destroyed by a flood of the Danube , the parish and the patronage of St. George were transferred to the Kagran parish church in Kagran before 1438 . Since 1890 the parish was rebuilt by the monastery of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus and since 1918 it has been run by the Order of Don Bosco .

Heart of Jesus Church

The church was built between 1923 and 1924 by the builders Karl Ambacher and Hans Sauer and was first a branch church of the Kagran parish church and was elevated to a parish church in 1934 and incorporated into the Salesian Order.

The cubic building with a roof turret is kept in the restrained Heimat style. The simple pillar hall with gallery was oriented to the east during the expansion from 1970 to 1972 and enlarged by an extension to the west.

There are glass paintings from the Schlierbach Abbey. A wall mosaic Madonna and Child is by the painter Wilhelm Kocian. The high altar bears a crucifixion group with three figures from the first half of the 18th century from the former Rosalienkapelle in Freihaus on the Wieden. There are sculptures by Alfred Crepaz from 1951, a figure of Christ the King, reliefs with scenes from the life of Christ, figures of St. Thaddhäus and Antonius, as well as the design of the pulpit and the communion grille.
