The Vienna Matzleinsdorfer Platz stop of the ÖBB is in Vienna's 10th district , Favoriten ; the underground tram stops of Wiener Linien are in the 5th district, Margareten . The station was opened in 1969, is part of the main S-Bahn line and an important hub in Vienna's local transport. The operational center of the main train station and a service company of ÖBB-TS GmbH are located right next to the stop .

The Matzleinsdorfer Platz underground station is currently being built below the station . It should be the provisional terminus of the U2 subway line from 2027 .

Plant & history

All platforms and the bus stop located under the railway bridge between the lanes are barrier-free.

ÖBB stop

At Matzleinsdorfer Platz there was originally a stop that fell victim to the expansion of the freight station. In 1903 negotiations were started to rebuild, but they did not lead to any result.

To unbundle high-speed rail traffic from goods traffic, a new route was built between Meidling and the express train tunnel on the northern edge of the freight station and operated from June 27, 1969. Since then, the elevated Matzleinsdorfer Platz stop has also been located there and went into operation three months later, on September 28, 1969.

In order to disentangle the steadily increasing car traffic of 24,000 vehicles a day at the traffic junction Matzleinsdorfer Platz / Margaretengürtel , the city-side end of Triester Straße , the two-lane underpass in the course of the belt was the first of its kind in Vienna to be opened to traffic on December 22, 1951 .

Regional trains have also stopped at this stop since December 2009. The station has a covered central platform with two tracks, which can be reached from the former ticket hall at street level by means of an escalator and elevator. This was retrofitted in December 2010 and the platform access was redesigned as part of the work.

After the former south station was demolished, motorail trains were also handled on an interim basis at the station area. In June 2014 this function was taken over by the newly created car train system at the main station; the facility at Matzleinsdorfer Platz was abandoned.

Underground tram station

Underground tram station

The underground Ustrab station has a triangular track and three platforms with double stops . This underground crossing system is signal-protected with two independent systems. At peak times, 90 trains run here within an hour.

The continued increase in individual traffic prompted the city planners to build a sub-paving tram , or Ustrab for short. The facility on the southern belt, including the Matzleinsdorfer Platz traffic structure, was opened on January 11, 1969. In the course of this, Vienna's first "rolling carpet", a moving walkway to accelerate underground pedestrian traffic and to make the long walkways easier for older people, was also built. The entire facility (excluding the train stop) comprised nine entrances, six escalators and eleven staircases. The moving walk was decommissioned in the 1990s and subsequently expanded. In the years 2002 to 2009 the Ustrab facility was upgraded with elevators, in return the northern access to Reinprechtsdorfer Straße and Wiedner Hauptstraße was closed. In the years 2010 to 2011 the station was modernized and brought into line with the underground standard.

Metro station

As part of the U2 / U5 line intersection expansion project, a Matzleinsdorfer Platz subway station is to be built at the S-Bahn station by 2027 , which is to be served by the U2 . It is to become the temporary terminus of the U2 line until it is extended to Wienerberg in the course of the second part of the expansion project . In connection with the construction of the underground stations, there are extensive changes in the area of the Gürtelstrasse . At this point, the U2 must pass under the railway line and also the tunnel of the underground tram . There will be entrances on the side of the 10th and 5th district and direct connections to the underground tram and the S-Bahn station. As the third connection point between the underground and the S-Bahn in the south, the underground station is intended to relieve the U1 , U3 and U6 lines .

The groundbreaking ceremony for this subway station took place in October 2018. The first shafts were dug in spring 2020. The tunnel boring machine is brought underground via these shafts .

Neighboring stations of the Matzleinsdorfer Platz underground station on the U2 are the Reinprechtsdorfer Straße underground station and the Gussriegelstraße underground station .

ÖBB base

The so-called high - tech support point Matzleinsdorf was built on the area of the former freight station Vienna Matzleinsdorf between 2008 and 2010 , which is one of the Vienna locations of ÖBB-Technische Services . Maintenance work on locomotives and passenger coaches is carried out here, as well as cleaning and supply (e.g. catering, equipping the sleeping cars) of the train sets. These will be provided from here for the main train station in the future.

The area is around 1.4 km long, consists of a company building, a 240 m long block train hall with elevated tracks and individual work stations on 15,000 m², workshops for ÖBB technical services and ÖBB production , seven 700 meter long set-up tracks and other sidings. Austria's only tandem underfloor wheel set lathe is located in its own hall. There is a total of around 10 hectares of track system, the total investment costs amounted to around 177 million euros. The roof area of the block train hall is divided into 29 shed roofs , the structure being statically designed in such a way that in the event of a train derailment the row of central columns could be omitted without damaging the entire structure. When the doors are opened and closed, the overhead conductor rail is folded to the side without interrupting the power supply. There are also air curtains on the gates to save heating costs.

The entire system is designed for drive-through operation; The train sets can thus enter the complex from the south, be cleaned and serviced and then leave it on the north side. This design and the concentration of several fields of work at one location are intended to minimize downtimes and save around ten million euros in the first few years of operation.
