The Neubaugasse is a three-storey underground station U3 at the boundary between the 6 . and 7 . Viennese district. It is named after the Neubaugasse shopping street . The station, which extends between Kirchengasse and Neubaugasse, has side platforms that are located in two tunnels arranged one above the other.
It was opened on September 4, 1993 with the opening of the second section of the U3 between the Volkstheater and Westbahnhof and is one of the stations in the Vienna underground network with the most widely spaced entrances and exits. These lead on the one hand via a mezzanine to Mariahilfer Strasse and on the other hand to the basement of the Gerngross department store on the corner of Kirchengasse and Mariahilfer Strasse. The location directly beneath Vienna's busiest shopping street ensures a high number of passengers, but has also led to the expansion of a beggar and drug scene in recent years . This public frequency also made the station a target of “public branding”.
The House of the Sea is located near the station .
Expansion project "Line cross U2 / U5"
A station for the U2 line will also be built here by 2027 as part of its southern extension from the town hall to Matzleinsdorfer Platz . The platforms were built at a depth of 35 meters under the two-story platforms of the U3. This means that the platforms of the U2 will be the deepest in the entire Vienna underground network. In addition to the existing exits, there are also elevators and stairs in Mariahilfer Strasse and Kirchengasse.
At the beginning of 2020, the preparatory work for the U2 station began.
The tram line 49 will also be directly connected to the underground station via the new staircase in Kirchengasse .
The neighboring stations on the U2 will be the Rathaus underground station and the Pilgramgasse underground station .
