The Clube dos 13 , also Clube dos Treze (German: Klub der Dreizehn), was founded on July 11, 1987 to represent the interests of 13 of the most important Brazilian football clubs. In the meantime, the União dos Grandes Clubes do Futebol Brasileiro , the "Association of the Major Clubs of Brazilian Football", has grown to 20 members and represents these clubs vis-à-vis the association and, for example, also markets the championship's media rights .

Football championships from 1987 and 2000

1987: Copa União

The reason for the founding of Clube dos 13 was originally the holding of the Brazilian soccer championship in 1987 at a time when the Brazilian soccer association Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF) was only able to act to a limited extent. This championship, also called Copa União ("Union Cup "), was ultimately not officially recognized, so the championship of Flamengo Rio de Janeiro that year is to be assessed as unofficial. On the other hand, the Clube dos 13 never recognized the championship of the official title holder Sport Recife .

2000: Copa João Havelange

In 2000, no national championship could be held for legal reasons and the Clube dos 13 organized an alternative competition, which was named after the then Brazilian FIFA chairman João Havelange , with the full approval of the CBF . 115 clubs competed in this competition and the winner CR Vasco da Gama is listed as champion of that year in all lists .

Further details on these championships can be found in the main article Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol .
