Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz: |
The Rathaus subway station of the Vienna subway - line U2 , located in the tunnel, is located on the border between the 1st and 8th districts of Vienna. It is located directly under Landesgerichtsstrasse between Josefstädter Strasse and Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz and has two side platforms and exits on both sides of Landesgerichtsstrasse. At the Josefstädter Straße exit you can change to tram line 2 in the direction of Dornbach or Friedrich-Engels-Platz . Barrier-free access by elevator is currently only possible via the Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz exit.
The name giver is the Vienna City Hall in the immediate vicinity. Other outstanding points in the vicinity of the station are the parliament , the building complex of the Vienna Regional Court , the former Military Geographic Institute and the Niedermair cabaret theater .
history
The station was opened on October 8, 1966 under the name Friedrich Schmidt-Platz as a sub-pavement tram . On August 30, 1980, it reopened as a U2 station under the current name of Rathaus . In the years 2000 to 2002, the platforms were converted for operation with long trains with a view to extending the U2 line towards the stadium .
Expansion project "Line cross U2 / U5"
In the years 2019 to 2027, new platforms for the U2 line will be built about 30 meters below street level and thus below the current station as part of the expansion project for the U2 / U5 line, which will then lead to Matzleinsdorfer Platz . The current U2 platforms will then be served by the U5 line, which will then run from Karlsplatz to Frankhplatz . The new platforms are connected to the existing platforms, and there will be new entrances from the street to the U2. As part of the renovation, not only the station itself, but the entire Schottentor - Karlsplatz section will be closed for two years.
Once the expansion work is complete, the 48A buses will also stop at the Rathaus station.
The neighboring stations during the U2 are the schottentor and the subway station Neubaugasse and the neighboring stations during the U5 are the subway station Frankhplatz and the subway station Volkstheater be.
