The Schottentor station , also known as Schottentor University , is a two-story underground station on the U2 line in Vienna's 1st district, Innere Stadt, below Maria-Theresien-Straße. The name of the station is derived from the Schottentor of the same name , a former gate in the Vienna city wall that was demolished in 1860.

The Schottentor transport structure is one of the busiest public transport nodes in Vienna. A total of 13 lines meet here. In addition to the U2 are the about the ring trains running continuity tram lines D (Absberggasse - Nußdorf ), 1 (Stefan-Fadinger Square - Prater Hauptallee ) and 71 (Stock Exchange - Central cemetery), the radial lines 37 (according to Hohewarte ), 38 ( to Grinzing ), 40 (to Gersthof ), 41 (to Pötzleinsdorf ), 42 (to Antonigasse), 43 (to Neuwaldegg ) and 44 (to Ottakring ) as well as the bus routes 1A (to Stephansplatz ) and 40A (to Döblinger Friedhof ) have here their terminus. The station includes the so-called Schottenpassage , which allows pedestrians to cross below the ring road. You can go up and down to the subway by escalator . In addition, elevators lead from one level to the next. The station has a central platform .

The high volume of traffic is mainly due to the adjacent university and the meeting of 12 traffic lines. In the 1960s, the loops originally located on the surface were redesigned for the tram lines that ended here to two loop systems on top of each other at street level and in the first basement. Because of the oval shape, which, seen from above, together with the tram ramp to Währinger Straße, reminds of a pan or casserole, and based on the mayor at the time, Franz Jonas , this loop system is popularly called "Jonas-Reindl". The trains from lines 43 and 44 coming from Universitätsstraße turn over the above-ground loop , while the loop on the first basement floor is used by lines 37, 38, 40, 41 and 42 coming from Währinger Straße . When, in the late 1970s, the underground tram running under the double line was converted and extended to the underground line U2, the Schottentor station was built on a second basement floor.

The bus stop for bus line 40A is a little off the beaten track in Hohenstaufengasse.

Due to construction work on the future U5 stations Rathaus , Volkstheater , Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz , which will be blocked for modifications for automatic operation on the U5, the Schottentor station will be the inner-city terminus of the U2 for two years from 2020.
