Gersthof is a district of Vienna in the 18th district of Währing and one of the 89 Viennese cadastral communities .

geography

Gersthof and the surrounding area around 1872 ( recording sheet of the regional survey)

Gersthof is located in the middle of the municipality and borders on the districts Pötzleinsdorf , Währing and Weinhaus . In the south, Gersthof borders the Hernals districts of Hernals and Dornbach . The cadastral community of Gersthof covers an area of 87.85 hectares . Furthermore, there is a statistical census district called Gersthof, consisting of ten census districts, whose borderline differs from that of the cadastral community of the same name.

On the border to Pötzleinsdorf is the Scheibenberg ( 252  m ). The highest point of Gersthof is a 265  m high nameless hill in the southwest of the district. Old field names in the local area are Alsegg, Hohenau, Wallrissen and Winterleiten.

Alt-Gersthof is the old town center and is located in the northwest of today's district on the underground Währinger Bach between Scheibenbergstraße and Erndtgasse. Neu-Gersthof was laid out in the last quarter of the 19th century with a grid-shaped street course. It lies in the east of the cadastral community and is bordered by Bastiengasse, Gersthofer Straße, Schindlergasse and Alseggerstraße. Today the entire area of Gersthof shows itself to be a predominantly densely built-up residential area. In the area south of Neu-Gersthof, small villas with gardens were built from the 1880s. The initially uninhabited area between Alt-Gersthof and Neu-Gersthof was built with tenement houses from the 1890s.

history

Gersthof was first mentioned in a deed of purchase in 1497. The name goes back to a farm that belonged to a Georg Gerstler. Previously the place was called Hagenau or Hohenau. In 1476 the place had just 13 houses. The Dorotheerstift gradually brought the entire area into its possession. After the monastery was dissolved in 1786, the place came to the Klosterneuburg monastery . Gersthof was probably hardest hit by the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna . The place no longer existed on a map from 1684. As a result, the place remained small and tranquil. In 1750 Gersthof had only 13 houses, in 1822 just 16 more, with a total of 308 inhabitants.

The previous local judge Johann Schwarz became the first mayor of Gersthof on July 5, 1850. His successor was Karl Bastien (28 years in office; Bastiengasse is named after him). Today's Gersthof cemetery was consecrated in 1880 . The town did not grow until the second half of the 19th century. In 1871 the Viennese Housing Reform Association was founded, which had Neu-Gersthof built in stages from 1874 onwards. This was done partly according to the model of the Währinger cottage district and in many cases by the builder Paul Oberst. In 1890 the place had 317 houses.

In 1890 the Lower Austrian Landtag decided to unite Vienna with the suburbs. The law came into force on January 1, 1892 and united Gersthof, Währing, Pötzleinsdorf, Weinhaus, Neustift am Walde and Salmannsdorf to form the 18th district of Vienna, Währing. Since 1938 Neustift am Walde and Salmannsdorf belong to the 19th district of Vienna, Döbling . The area of the former village of Gersthof was still 117 hectares and in 1890 comprised 3,984 inhabitants. Areas in the south of Gersthof, including the large slaughterhouse, were later assigned to Hernals.

Culture and sights

Johannes Nepomuk Chapel

In the center of the district is the neo-Gothic Gersthof parish church , which was built from 1887 to 1891 according to plans by the architect Richard Jordan . The parish church of Gersthof was the place of activity of chaplain Heinrich Maier , a member of the Maier-Messner-Caldonazzi resistance group . A memorial plaque for Maier was attached to the Gersthof rectory and a tree was planted in his honor in front of the parish church. The chaplain Heinrich Maier statue is in the church itself.

The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel in Alt-Gersthof was previously the seat of the Roman Catholic parish of Gersthof. The chapel is a baroque building with original furnishings . Also preserved from the Baroque period are the Lydl Foundation House, which was built from 1736 to 1739 for Matthäus Lydl von Schwanau, the founder of the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel, and the Maria Theresa Schlössel , a late Baroque building built around 1730/40 Country house.

The Gersthof general gymnastics club is the largest gymnastics club in Vienna. It was founded in 1887. The Gersthofer SV is an established in 1912 football club from the district part.

The coat of arms of Gersthof, which was also integrated into the district coat of arms of Währing, shows Saint John Nepomuk . The saint stands on a green meadow against a blue background and wears a silver gown with a red stole decorated with gold . He holds a crucifix in his left hand and a green palm branch in his right. The halo is studded with five gold stars.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Wiener Vororte Straße runs through Gersthof and forms the border to the districts of Währing and Weinhaus over long stretches. Your section in Gersthof is called Gersthofer Straße. The Vienna Gersthof stop on the suburban line was built in 1898 according to plans by Otto Wagner . It forms a junction for public transport: the tram lines 40, 41 and 9, the bus line 10A and the rapid transit line S45 stop here. During the night, the station is approached by the NightLine N41.

The Orthopedic Hospital Gersthof , run by the Vienna Hospital Association , was built in the 1920s. However, most of it is not in Gersthof, but already in Hernals. The Semmelweis Women's Clinic , built in 1908, is located entirely in Gersthof, and was incorporated into the Rudolf Foundation in 2002 as the department of the obstetric and gynecological department .
