In 1670, Matthäus Lydl von Schwanau was born in today's house at Gersthofer Straße 127. At that time Gersthof was a small village which did not have its own church, but was assigned to the Währingen parish. Lydl von Schwanau had been court war councilor in the vicinity of Eugen von Savoyen and, when he retired in Gersthof, did not want to go to the Währingen parish church to attend Holy Mass every day .

The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel was built from 1736 to 1737 as a house and grave chapel for Matthäus Lydl von Schwanau. On October 18, 1739, the chapel was consecrated to St. John of Nepomuk, 10 years after his canonization. Lydl von Schwanau donated the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel not only for his personal mass visit, but also as a public chapel for all villagers.

When the Roman Catholic parish of Gersthof was founded in the course of the Josephine reforms in 1784, the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel became its parish church. The parish was poor as a result of the Seven Years' War and remained orphaned for two years because the pastor had asked for his transfer due to lack of money. In 1790 the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel received its tower top, the helmet of which was renewed in 1813. Today's Gersthofer parish church was built from 1887 to 1891 . In 1899 she was given the parish rights of the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel. In 1902 the Trinitarian Order took over the care of the chapel until it was placed under the parish of Gersthof as a branch church in 1925 .

The old chapel was forgotten and deteriorated before and after the Second World War. The district councilor Leopold Rosenmayr († February 20, 1981) had campaigned for the rescue together with the district council and the citizens of Währingen and Gersthof. With the help of the federal government, the state and the church, 1.4 million schillings were raised. The chapel was restored from 1975 to 1979, and further baroque frescoes with depictions of the four evangelists were uncovered in the dome . The ceremonial opening after the renovation took place on May 24, 1979 by Helmut Krätzl, Auxiliary Bishop of Vienna. Another interior restoration took place in 1993.

Location and architecture

inside view

The baroque chapel is located at Gersthofer Straße 129. To the left and right of the building are baroque houses, including the Lydl Foundation House, which is partially used as the chapel's parsonage.

The architectural style suggests the work of a student of Fischer von Erlach, but the exact names of the artists and the builders involved are not known.

The main rectangular room has a dome and the choir to the south has a tower. The north facade facing the street with the main portal is triaxial and has niche figures of Saints Anthony of Padua and Maria Magdalena . In the gable above the main portal there is a bust relief depicting the church patron Johannes Nepomuk. A small square sacristy is added to the south of the choir . The main room is connected by three large openings with a side room to the east.

The interior of the chapel has been consistently preserved from the Baroque period. The main fresco in the dome depicts the Assumption of the Virgin . The oil painting on the wall above the high altar is a work by Andreas Viso from 1737 and shows Johannes Nepomuk before King Wenceslaus .
