The Weinhaus parish church is a Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to St. Joseph in the Weinhaus district of Vienna's 18th district Währing and is located at Gentzgasse 142.

history

The Weinhaus parish church was built in a neo-Gothic style according to plans by the Viennese cathedral builder Friedrich von Schmidt under builder Johann Schmalzhofer. After the groundbreaking on September 16, 1883, the church was consecrated on May 12, 1889 by the Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Cölestin Josef Ganglbauer . The church was completed in 1893. The initiative to build it came from Pastor Joseph Deckert (1843–1901), whose service from April 1901 gave the church forecourt, which, however, was named Pfarrer-Deckert-Platz in view of the anti-Semitic writings written by the clergy 1989 could no longer exist.

Architecture and equipment

Interior view towards the high altar

According to the ground plan, it is a three-aisled complex, which ends in the north with a pentagonal presbytery in the central nave. In the south, the central nave is closed off by a tower 65 meters high, which is flanked by two stair turrets, which form the connection to the organ choir and the sounding floor. Four circlets adorned with double crossed roses and crabs rise above the bell. The octagonal transition to the spire, which ends in a stone cross rose, is formed by four pinnacles. The tower was later given a copper roof due to damage.

The main portal itself, the tympanum of which is decorated with foliage in the covings, is crowned by a mighty gable covered with crabs. The transition from the main facade to the stone walls is formed by two rows of ornamented pinnacles. The baptistery (formerly the Loreto chapel) is attached to the presbytery on the right and the sacristy on the left. Since the dimensions of the same extend beyond the building line of the two side aisles, the floor plan of the church forms a cross.

The Weinhauser parish church was originally equipped with pillar saints, who were removed from the pillars in the course of various renovation works and given to the cathedral building hut . Only the figures of the apostles Petrus and Paulus left and right above the communion bench (work by the South Tyrolean woodcarver Stuflesser from Val Gardena) as well as the Sacred Heart statue and the statue of the Queen of the Rosary above today's communion stage (work by the sculptor Josef Weyrich from Vienna) have been preserved. .

The ever-light traffic light , a good imitation of the traffic lights in Hagia Sophia in Istanbul , is a donation from the Duchess of Orléans, née Countess Czartoryski. The Way of the Cross comes from Franz Barwig .

Eastern part of the Rosary Path

Behind the parish church, in a garden on the mountain side up to the Türkenschanze , the sculptor Rochus Haas created fifteen wayside shrines (stone pillars) for the Rosary Path . It was laid out in 1883 on the slope between the parish church, which was then under construction, and the so-called Türkenschanze. They were erected in 1892 and each consist of a column that is widened towards the top and contains a half-relief that depicts the secrets of the rosary , which is rich in friends, is painful and is glorious . The wayside shrines are made of sand-lime brick.
