Rochus Haas

Rochus Haas (born August 14, 1837 in the Stainz region ; † April 22, 1903 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Life

Rochus Haas was born the tenth of eleven children of the married couple Alois Haas and Anna Haas, née Triebl. The family lived in Karbach 20, commonly known as Kreuzjagl in the municipality of Stainz near Straden in Styria. Even as a shepherd boy, Haas showed a talent for carving, apprenticed to a carver in Graz and went to Vienna in 1856 , but quickly broke off his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . A grant from the State of Styria enabled him to study for two years in Munich with Joseph Knabl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich .
