GFPS - Association for Student Exchange in Central and Eastern Europe eV (abbreviated GFPS ) is a German association based in Freiburg im Breisgau that promotes the exchange and understanding of students from different countries in Eastern and Central Europe. He works closely with partner associations from Poland and the Czech Republic .

history

The association was founded in 1984 as the "Association for the Promotion of Study Visits by Polish Students in the Federal Republic of Germany eV" (GFPS for short) in Freiburg in order to enable Polish students to spend one semester in Germany after the end of martial law in Poland . The core of the program is the award of a semester scholarship and personal support for the scholarship holders on site. After the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, "GFPS-Polska", a partner association, was founded in Poland in 1994 to enable German students to spend a semester in Poland. In 1998, " Janua linguarum reserata " (since 2004 "GFPS-CZ") was founded as a partner association in the Czech Republic , so that a German-Czech exchange has taken place since then. The name of the German association was then changed to its current form, whereby the old abbreviation "GFPS" was retained.

A program has existed since 2004 that enables students from Belarus to spend one semester in Germany. The first admission of students from Ukraine is planned for the winter semester 2017/2018.

The association is still run entirely on a voluntary basis by students.

Field of activity

In particular, the partner associations award grants for one-semester study and language course stays as part of a bidirectional German-Polish and a German-Czech student exchange; the exchange program with Belarus is currently still unidirectional from Belarus to Germany. In addition, the decentrally structured association organizes larger and smaller events such as tandem language courses, seminars and exhibitions in order to promote the exchange of students from different countries and international understanding. The German-Polish exchange program is financed in particular by the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation , the German-Czech by the German-Czech Future Fund. Other sponsors are the German-Polish Youth Office , the Central and Eastern Europe Initiative and the Zeit Foundation . There is also a support group for the scholarship program.
