Gabriele Lesser

Gabriele Alexandra Lesser (born May 16, 1960 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German historian and journalist . She lives in Berlin and Warsaw .

Life

Lesser studied Eastern European history , political science and philosophy in Cologne , Mainz , Frankfurt am Main and Krakow . In 1990 she received the Fritz Theodor Epstein Prize of the Association of Eastern European Historians in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for her book Leben als OB.

Lesser then worked for six years as an assistant at the seminar for Eastern European history at the University of Cologne with Andreas Kappeler and Manfred Alexander . She specialized in the 20th century , the time of National Socialism , the Second World War and the Nazi occupation in Poland and Ukraine . For a planned dissertation on Hans Frank , the governor general in Poland during the German occupation (1939-45), Lesser traveled for two years through Poland, Germany, Great Britain and Israel, spoke with contemporary witnesses and collected material in archives.

Since 1995 Lesser has been the permanent Poland correspondent of the taz in Berlin and other daily and weekly newspapers in Germany (including Badische Zeitung , Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger , Die Rheinpfalz ), in Austria ( Der Standard ), Switzerland ( Der Bund ) and in Luxembourg ( Luxembourg word ).

As the author and editor of a number of publications, Lesser deals with Polish history and the present, with culture and economy, in particular with Polish-German and Polish-Jewish relations. She also writes about Poland's eastern neighbors.
