The Egydius Church is the former Pötzleinsdorfer parish church in the 18th district of Währing in Vienna . Today it is a Roman Catholic branch church of the Christ the King's Parish and is consecrated to St. Aegydius .

history

In 1529 a chapel in Pötzleinsdorf was mentioned for the first time, which was consecrated to St. Mary and St. Wilhelm . However, this was burned down in 1683 in the course of the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna and then rebuilt. In 1746 the building was expanded into a church, which was destroyed in the great village fire in 1750, as were 31 of the 32 houses. In 1752 the complete rebuilding of the church began. However, this was not built on the old site, but on a property donated by Countess Negrelli to the landlord (the Himmelpfort monastery). The original location of the church is unknown. The new church became a parish church in 1784raised. The Aegydius Church only lost this status on September 1, 1964, when the new Pötzleinsdorfer parish church was inaugurated. Since then it has been a branch church. The interior of the church was renovated in the summer of 2002.

Building

Interior of the Aegydius Church

The Aegydius Church is a late baroque , single-nave church, which consists of a rectangular room with rounded corners. The square tower integrated into the facade is striking. The original bells were transported away for armament purposes in the two world wars , today the tower has four bells. In front of the church there are two baroque tombstones on the north wall. The water of the Pötzleinsdorfer spring, which was once said to have medicinal properties, flows out of a mascaron in a wall niche.

The central element of the interior is the main altar with the depiction of the crucifixion of Christ by Johann Nepomuk Steiner. Furthermore, in the front part of the church there is a large tabernacle with adoring angels and above it an icon-like image of Mary from the 17th century. In addition to the main altar, the Aegydius Church also has two side altars, one of which shows the patron saint of the church (depiction by Johann Nepomuk Steiner), the second shows Saint Anthony of Padua . Other important elements of the church are a depiction of St. George of August Querfurt as well as the chalice-like marble baptismal font. The wooden ceiling of the baptismal font is crowned by a sculpture of St. John the Baptist . This metal copy replaced a stolen ivory sculpture . The rounded niches of the church are also adorned with statues of St. Wolfgang , St. Leonhard and St. Mark , the fourth corner is adorned by the pulpit made of ash wood , which was built in 1835 . Above the entrance to the church is a seven-register organ from 1816, which has been rebuilt several times. The way of the cross of the church, however, dates from 1944.
