Cölestin Josef Ganglbauer OSB (* August 20, 1817 in Thanstetten, today Schiedlberg in Upper Austria ; † December 14, 1889 in Vienna ) was abbot of Kremsmünster Abbey from 1876 to 1881 and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vienna from 1881 to 1889 and cardinal from 1884 with the titular church of Sant'Eusebio .

biography

Celestine Josef Ganglbauer was the first of four children of the small farmers and horse traders Johann and Katharina Ganglbauer. He joined in 1838 in the Benedictine -Stift Kremsmünster in Upper Austria and received on 22 July 1843, the sacrament of Holy Orders . At first he was a chaplain in Neuhofen an der Krems , taught at the collegiate high school, then was head of the collegiate convict and from 1875 prior . On April 19, 1876, he was elected Abbot of Kremsmünster and was able to complete the renovation of the monastery and the monastery church on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary in 1877. He was also a member of the manor house of the Austrian Imperial Council .

At the banquet on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary on August 18, 1877, Emperor Franz-Joseph was impressed by the abbot's toast. Ganglbauer presented himself as Josephine and liberal-loyal to the emperor, above all because he first toasted the emperor and only then the pope. When the archbishop's chair of Vienna became vacant in 1881, the emperor voted for Ganglbauer. The abbot was appointed archbishop on March 22, 1881, he was now the second abbot of Kremsmünster to be promoted to Viennese bishop, the first being Anton Wolfradt . On August 28, 1881, he was consecrated as a bishop by the Apostolic Nuncio in Austria, Serafino Vannutelli , in Kremsmünster; Co- consecrators were Franz Joseph Rudigier , Bishop of Linz , and Matthäus Binder , Bishop of Sankt Pölten . On November 10, 1884 Pope Leo XIII raised him . to the cardinal with the titular church of Sant'Eusebio .

Ganglbauer founded the General Wiener Kirchenbauverein to build new churches in the working-class districts of Vienna. With his support, Anton Maria Schwartz was able to found the congregation of the Kalasantines in Vienna on November 24th, 1889 , which has set itself the task of pastoral care. Two years before the social encyclical Rerum Novarum Leos XIII. He dedicated a pastoral letter to the social question on February 20, 1889 . He also promoted church singing, church music and Catholic associations.

After his death he was buried in the crypt of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. In 1886 the Ganglbauergasse in Vienna- Ottakring (16th district) was named after him.
