Serafino Cardinal Vannutelli (born November 26, 1834 in Genazzano , Province of Rome , Italy , † August 19, 1915 in Rome ) was a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Serafino Vannutelli was ordained a priest on December 22nd, 1860 and worked as a professor of Catholic theology and papal diplomat; among other things, he was the auditor of the nunciatures in Mexico (1864–1867) and Bavaria (1867–1869).

On June 25, 1869 he was by Pope Pius IX. Appointed Titular Archbishop of Nicaea . The episcopal ordination donated to him on July 18, 1869 Costantino Patrizi Naro ; Co- consecrators were Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi , Archbishop ad personam and Bishop of Osimo , and Pelagio Labastida , Archbishop of México . Vannutelli was also an Apostolic Delegate in several Latin American states, including Peru and Colombia. In 1875 he became apostolic nuncio in Belgium and in 1880 nuncio in Austria-Hungary .

Pope Leo XIII. took him on March 14, 1887 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Sabina in the college of cardinals . In 1888 he became prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Holy Relics , in 1891 chamberlain of the Holy Cardinals College . From January 1893 he held the office of Archbishop of Bologna for six months before he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Frascati . From December 1893 to October 1896 Cardinal Vannutelli also headed the Index Congregation as prefect . On November 20, 1899, he was appointed cardinal major penitentiary, and from 1903 to 1908 Vannutelli was secretary of the Holy Inquisition . In 1913 he became Dean of the College of Cardinals and Cardinal Bishop of Ostia-Velletri . As such, he headed the conclave that Benedict XV. elected to the Pope.

Vincenzo Vannutelli , his successor as cardinal dean, was his younger brother.

Serafino Vannutelli died in Rome on August 19, 1915 at around one o'clock in the morning after receiving the sacraments . He was buried in the Roman cemetery of Campo Verano .
