Luigi Oreglia di Santo Stefano (born July 9, 1828 in Bene Vagienna , Province of Cuneo , Italy , † December 7, 1913 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Luigi Oreglia di Santo Stefano, who came from the family of the Barons of Santo Stefano, received in 1851 after studying in Turin, the sacrament of Holy Orders . After further studies at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome, from which he graduated as Doctor iuris utriusque , he became prelate of the Consistorial Congregation in 1859, which he remained until 1866.

Pope Pius IX appointed him on May 4, 1866 Titular Archbishop of Tamiathis and Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium . He received his episcopal consecration on May 13 of the same year , Cardinal Lodovico Altieri , Cardinal Bishop of Albano ; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Pietro de Villanova Castellacci and Alessandro Franchi . In Belgium he turned against liberal Catholic aspirations. On May 29, 1868, Oreglia became a nuncio in Portugal . From 1869 to 1870 he took part in the First Vatican Council , at which he supported the dogmatization of papal infallibility .

Pope Pius IX took him on December 22, 1873 with the titular church of Sant'Anastasia as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals . In December 1876 he became prefect of the Congregation of Indulgences and Relics , which he remained until 1882. Cardinal Oreglia participated in the conclave of 1878 as a supporter of the conservative wing . From 1882 to 1883 Cardinal Oreglia held the office of chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . On March 24, 1884 he was by Pope Leo XIII. appointed Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina . From 1885 he was also cardinal chamberlain and, as such, led the ecclesiastical affairs during the vacancy of 1903. He became Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina and Subdean of the College of Cardinals in May 1889 , and finally Cardinal Dean and Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri on November 30, 1896 . After the death of Leo XIII. he headed the conclave in 1903 , where he was the only cardinal who had previously participated in a conclave . He initially protested against the veto of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I against the election of Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro , but then supported the election of Giuseppe Sarto as Pope Pius X.

He died of pneumonia in December 1913 at the age of 85 and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery. His death sparked international media coverage.
