Lodovico Altieri (born July 17, 1805 in Rome , † August 11, 1867 in Albano ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church .

Life

Altieri was ordained a priest on March 24, 1833 . On July 11, 1836 appointed titular archbishop of Ephesus , donated to him by Pope Gregory XVI. Episcopal ordination on July 17, 1836, co- consecrators were Giovanni Soglia Ceroni , Latin Patriarch of Constantinople and Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regular Clergy , and Archbishop Giacomo Sinibaldi , President of the Pontifical Academy for the Ecclesiastical Nobility . Altieri was the Apostolic Nuncio in Vienna from 1836 to 1845 .

He was founded by Pope Gregory XVI. created on December 14, 1840 in pectore as cardinal , which was published after his resignation as nuncio on April 21, 1845. He became cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Portico . In 1845 he was raised pro hac vice to cardinal priest of his title diakonia . He then became a member of the Roman Curia , initially secretary, and since September 5, 1861, prefect of the Index Congregation . On December 17, 1860 he became cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Albano . He took part in the conclave of 1846 which Cardinal Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti elected Pope. Pius IX appointed him on March 8, 1863 archpriest of the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano .

He cared for the sick and dying during a cholera epidemic that struck the diocese of Albano, contracting the disease from which he eventually died.
