Francesco Salesio Della Volpe
Francesco Salesio Cardinal Della Volpe (born December 24, 1844 in Ravenna , † November 5, 1916 in Rome ) was Cardinal of the Curia .
Life
The son of Count Ignazio della Volpe and Ortensia Mazzolani attended the seminary of Bertinoro, the Pius seminar in Rome 1862-1867 and the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy 1868-1874. After his ordination on December 21, 1867, he was His Holiness' s secret chamberlain from 1874 to 1878. The Pope appointed him house prelate on May 17, 1878 , canon of St. Peter's Basilica in 1878 and secretary of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics in 1882 . He was a member of the extraordinary mission for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III. Since August 17, 1886 he was Master of the Apostolic Chamber and since December 31, 1891, Prefect of the Papal House .
Leo XIII. appointed him on June 19, 1899 in pectore for Cardinal . The public proclamation took place in the consistory of April 15, 1901 and the admission to the college of cardinals took place on April 18 of the same year as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Aquiro . From January 26, 1911, he was Cardinal Prefect of the Index Congregation and Arch Chancellor of the Roman University in Rome. He participated in the papal conclave, 1903 , the Pius X chose and at the conclave in 1914 in part that Benedict XV. elected, whom he proclaimed as cardinal protodeacon and crowned on September 6, 1914.
His body was buried in the tomb of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide in the Campo Verano cemetery.
