Antonio Cardinal Vico (born January 9, 1847 in Agugliano , Ancona Province , Italy , † February 25, 1929 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Antonio Vico studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Rome . He holds a PhD in Philosophy, Catholic Theology and Canon Law . On September 20, 1873, he received the sacrament of ordination and, after completing his studies, worked as a pastor in the diocese of Rome . From 1877 to 1880 he was secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Spain , from 1880 to 1883 he carried out the same task at the Apostolic Delegation in Constantinople . From 1883 to 1887 he worked in the foreign diplomatic mission of the Vatican in France , from 1887 to 1893 in Spain, from 1893 to 1897 in Portugal .

On January 9, 1898, Mariano Cardinal Rampolla del Tindaro donated him the episcopal ordination after Pope Leo XIII. had appointed him on December 22nd of the previous year as Apostolic Delegate in Colombia and Titular Archbishop of Philippi . Antonio Vico was apostolic nuncio in Belgium from 1904 to 1907 and in Spain from 1907 to 1911.

On November 27, 1911, Pope Pius X accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Callisto in the college of cardinals . After his death, Cardinal Vico took part in the 1914 conclave . Pope Benedict XV appointed him on February 11, 1915 as Pro-Prefect and on July 8, 1918 as Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Rites . In the same year he was raised to Cardinal Bishop of Porto and Santa Rufina . He took part in the 1922 conclave , from which Pius XI. emerged as Pope. This appointed him papal legate at the Eucharistic Congress in Aquila, which took place in August 1923.

Antonio Vico died of flu on February 25, 1929 in Rome and was buried in his birthplace, Agugliano.
