Domenico Cardinal Svampa (born June 13, 1851 in Montegranaro , Italy , † August 10, 1907 in Bologna ) was Archbishop of Bologna .

Life

Svampa studied theology in Fermo and Rome and was ordained a priest on April 4, 1874 . He was Socius of the Academy of Thomas Aquinas in Rome and from 1879 professor of theology in the Archdiocese of Fermo .

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on May 23, 1887 Bishop of Forlí . He was ordained bishop on June 29th of the same year by Cardinal Giovanni Simeoni ; Co-consecrators were Domenico Maria Jacobini and Antonio Maria Grasselli . Among other things, Svampa modernized the teaching in seminaries and promoted charitable initiatives. Svampa was open to liberal currents.

In the consistory of May 18, 1894 Leo XIII took. Svampa as Cardinal Priest of Sant'Onofrio to the College of Cardinals on. Only three days later he appointed him Archbishop of Bologna. After the death of Leo XIII. he took part in the conclave of 1903 , which Pius X elected. A few years before the Pope's death, he was considered a papabile .

After Cardinal Svampa suffered a stroke in 1901 , his health deteriorated in the years that followed. He died in 1907 at the age of only 56.
