Domenico Maria Cardinal Jacobini (born September 3, 1837 in Rome ; † February 1, 1900 there ) was a cardinal to the Curia and a diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Jacobini attended the Pontifical Roman Seminary , where he earned a doctorate in philosophy (September 10, 1856), in theology (September 12, 1860) and both rights (June 28, 1863). After his ordination he was on November 28, 1866 an official of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide . He later became Professor of Greek (August 21, 1868) and Prefect of Studies (November 19, 1880) at the Pontifical Roman Seminary and on June 1, 1874 substitute for the Secretariat for the Apostolic Breven . Jacobini was promoted to the rank of House Prelate of His Holiness on August 2, 1877and received on September 19, 1879 the office of secretary of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs. As secretary, he essentially served as head of this dicastery , since the Pope only nominally held the title of prefect. After the end of the Papal States in 1870 had Jacobini politically, he supported the believers in their fight in favor of a Catholic press, accompanying local and foreign pilgrims during their visit of the apostles graves. In December 1870 Jacobini was injured in a demonstration. In the following year he founded the Associazione cattolica artistica ed operaia di carità reciproca , an association that supported artists and workers socially and whose spiritual he remained until 1896. In April 1878 the association opposed a decision by the Roman city council that banned catechism in the city's primary schools.

Jacobini became canon of St. Peter's Basilica after being appointed Vice Librarian of the Holy Roman Church on November 16, 1880. Two days later he also became prefect of studies of the Pontifical Athenaeum San Apollinare .

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on August 4, 1881 titular Archbishop of Tire . The archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica , Edoardo Cardinal Borromeo , donated him the episcopal ordination on August 14 of the same year at the Cathedra Petri ; Co- consecrators were Alessandro Sanminiatelli Zabarella , almsman of His Holiness , and Francesco Folicaldi , canon of St. Peter's Basilica. Leo XIII. took him on June 22, 1896 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals and he received on December 3 of the same year the titular church Santi Marcellino e Pietro . On December 14, 1899, Leo XIII appointed Cardinal Jacobini, already seriously ill, as Cardinal Vicar of the Diocese of Rome; He had died less than six weeks after his appointment. After being laid out in the Basilica of Santi XII Apostoli , his body was buried in the grave of his family in the Campo Verano cemetery.
