Girolamo Maria Cardinal Gotti OCD , born Antonio Giovanni Benedetto Gotti (born March 29, 1834 in Genoa , † March 16, 1916 in Rome ) was an Italian religious and curial cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Gotti joined the Order of the Discalced Carmelites in 1849 and was ordained a priest on December 20, 1856 . As theological adviser to his general Domenico di San Giuseppe , he took part in the First Vatican Council .

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him in 1892 titular Archbishop of Petra in Aegypto . He received his episcopal ordination from the Bishop of Albano , Cardinal Lucido Maria Parocchi ; Co- consecrators were the Curia Bishops Antonio Aiuti and Augusto Berlucca . In the same year, Gotti traveled to Brazil as intern . Leo XIII. accepted him on November 29, 1895 as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santa Maria della Scala in the college of cardinals .

From 1896 to 1899 Gotti was Prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics , from 1899 to 1902 Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and Religious , and from 1902 to 1916 Prefect of the Propaganda Congregation .

Girolamo Maria Gotti participated in the conclaves of 1903 and 1914 . In the conclave of 1903 he was considered papabile .
