Pietro Cardinal Respighi (born September 22, 1843 in Bologna , Papal States , † March 22, 1913 in Rome ) was Italian bishop of two dioceses and cardinal of the Curia .

Life

Pietro Respighi received on 25 November 1850, the sacrament of Confirmation , on 17 December 1864 he was appointed sub-deacon ordained and received on 23 December 1865, the diaconate . He attended the seminary of Bologna and the Roman seminary of Pius , where he was awarded the doctorate of theology and doctor of both rights on August 16, 1870 . After his ordination on March 31, 1866 in Rome, he worked from 1872 to June 1874 in the Archdiocese of Bologna as a professor for the seminary. He then became archpriest of the parish of Ss Gervasio e Protasio in Pieve di Budrio .

On December 14, 1891, he was appointed Bishop of Guastalla . He was ordained bishop by the Cardinal Chamberlain and Cardinal Vicar , Lucido Maria Parocchi , on December 20 of the same year in Rome; Co- consecrators were Andrea Aiuti , Secretary of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide , and Augusto Berlucca , Titular Bishop of Helenopolis in Bithynia . Pope Leo XIII. raised him on November 30, 1896 to Archbishop of Ferrara .

Pope Leo XIII. took him on June 19, 1899 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals , and he received on June 22 of the same year the titular church Santi Quattro Coronati . He resigned from his office as Archbishop of Ferrara on April 19, 1900, after having been appointed Cardinal Vicar ten days earlier . From 1900 to 1908 he was Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops . He took part in the 1903 conclave that Pope Pius X elected. From February 21, 1906 to April 15, 1907 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . On January 10, 1910, he became archpriest of the Lateran Basilica .

Pietro Respighi died in 1913 and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery. Later his remains were transferred to his former titular church Santi Quattro Coronati .

His nephew Carlo Respighi was Prefect of the Papal Ceremonies between 1918 and 1947 .
