Sebastiano Cardinal Martinelli OESA (born August 20, 1848 in Borgo Sant'Anna near Lucca , † July 4, 1918 in Rome ) was a diplomat and Curia Cardinal of the Catholic Church .

Life

Martinelli entered the Augustinian seminary at the age of 16 . He was ordained a priest on March 4, 1871 .

He was elected Prior General of the Augustinian Order in 1889 and 1896 . On August 18, 1896 he was by Pope Leo XIII. Appointed Titular Archbishop of Ephesus and Second Apostolic Delegate in the United States . He received his episcopal ordination on August 30th of the same year by Cardinal Secretary of State Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro ; Co- consecrators were Curia Bishop Guglielmo Pifferi OESA and the Bishop of Amelia , Vincenzo Giuseppe Veneri .

Pope Leo XIII. created him cardinal in 1901 and appointed him cardinal priest of Sant'Agostino in 1902 . In 1903 he took part in the conclave that Pope Pius X elected. From 1909 to 1918 Martinelli was prefect of the Congregation for Rites . At the conclave of 1914 , he could not attend because he was ill.

Sebastiano Martinelli was the brother of Cardinal Tommaso Maria Martinelli , who was promoted to cardinal in 1873.
