Life

Mathieu studied literature in Nancy until 1859. Four years later, on May 30, 1863, he was ordained a priest. He had been teaching history and literature at the Pont-à-Mousson seminary since 1860, where he had previously studied. After doing this until 1879, he became a chaplain at a Dominican nunnery , where he also became a canon in 1883. In 1890 Mathieu returned to Pont-à-Mousson to carry out important pastoral activities there.

Three years later he was appointed Bishop of Angers . The episcopal ordination donated him on March 19 of the same year Cardinal Guillaume-René Meignan (1817-1896), the then Archbishop of Tours . On June 25, 1896, he succeeded Cardinal Desprez Archbishop of Toulouse. The French government had recommended him for this post three weeks earlier. As a bishop, Mathieu made outstanding contributions to the free universities of Angers and Toulouse in his dioceses . On June 19, 1899 he was by Pope Leo XIII. accepted into the College of Cardinals and on June 22nd J. Cardinal Priest of Santa Sabina . The Pope persuaded him to stay in Rome. Cardinal Mathieu gave up the leadership of the Archdiocese of Toulouse in November 1899. He took part in the 1903 conclave , in which Pius X was elected. The new Pope appointed him treasurer of the college of cardinals in March 1905, which he stayed for almost a year. After the death of Cardinal Adolphe Perraud , Cardinal Mathieu became a member of the Académie française in 1906 . In 1907 he announced numerous publications. The well-known academic also took part in the International Eucharistic World Congress in London in 1908. After severe liver problems, he had to undergo an operation and eventually died at the age of 69.

Cardinal Mathieu was considered a shrewd advocate of French interests. Frankly in his judgment, however, he warned early on of some of Alfred Loisy's views .
