Charles-Émile Freppel (born June 1, 1827 in Obernai (Oberehnheim), † December 23, 1891 in Angers ) was a French Roman Catholic bishop and church historian.

Life

Freppel was trained as a priest at the seminary in Strasbourg and in 1854 appointed to the theological faculty of the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1867 he became dean of the Sainte-Geneviève church .

After his appointment as Bishop of Angers , the Archbishop of Bordeaux , François-Auguste-Ferdinand Cardinal Donnet , donated him episcopal ordination on April 18, 1870 .

At the first Vatican council in 1869/1870 he played a prominent role as one of the champions of the doctrine of infallibility .

In literary criticism , Freppel's answers to the works "The Life of Jesus" and "The Apostles" by Ernest Renan are still occasionally cited; Otherwise Freppel's literary work was caught up in the zeitgeist and is therefore - politically and theologically - out of date and history.

In 1868 Freppel was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor (Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur).

As an Alsatian, however, Freppel stood out for his hostility to Germany, and his interference in the Prussian Kulturkampf had to be suppressed by the French government, as a. In 1871 the peace negotiations between President Adolphe Thiers and Chancellor Otto von Bismarck would have been disrupted. But Thiers' successor, Patrice de Mac-Mahon , had to repeatedly slow down Freppel's attacks.

Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in Brest on June 7, 1880 , he took the place of Félix Dupanloup at the head of the clerical party.

Bishop Charles-Émile Freppel died on December 23, 1891 in Angers at the age of 64.
