Gustav Maximilian Justus von Croÿ ( French Gustave-Maximilien-Juste de Croÿ-Solre ; born September 12, 1773 in the Hermitage Palace near Cambrai ; † January 1, 1844 in Rouen ) was Cardinal and Archbishop of Rouen.

Life

He came from the noble Croÿ family and was the fifth son of Emmanuel Herzog von Croÿ and his wife Auguste Friederike zu Salm-Kyrburg .

As early as 1789 he was appointed canon in the diocese of Strasbourg , but fled to Austria because of the French Revolution . On November 3, 1797 he received in Vienna the priesthood . On August 23, 1819, he was elected bishop of Strasbourg, on 9 January 1820 he donated to the church of St-Sulpice de Paris , the archbishop of Reims Jean-Charles de Coucy the episcopal ordination ; Co - consecrators were Jules de Clermont-Tonnerre , former Bishop of Châlons , and Jean-Baptist-Marie-Anne-Antoine de Latil , Bishop of Chartres . From 1821 to 1830 he was appointed Grand Chaplain of France , one of the most prestigious offices at the royal court, overseeing the religious side of court life. In 1822 he was appointed peer of France and in 1823 moved to the chair of the Archbishop of Rouen .

In the consistory of March 21, 1825 he was appointed cardinal priest and received the titular church of Santa Sabina on May 21, 1829 . He took part in the conclaves of 1829 and 1830-1831 .

After his death he was buried in Rouen Cathedral.
