Jean-Charles de Coucy
Jean-Charles de Coucy (born September 23, 1746 in Château d'Escordat , Rethel , Ardennes , † March 9, 1824 in Reims ) was a French clergyman, bishop of La Rochelle and archbishop of Reims .
Life
He came from the Caucy-Pollecourt line and was the son of Charles-Nicolas de Gallebaut and his wife Marie-Anne du Bois de Lauberelle. In 1777 he became almsman to the Queen of France and Commendatabab of the wealthy Igny Abbey near Reims . On August 16, 1789 he was by Louis XVI. appointed Bishop of La Rochelle, confirmation by Pope Pius VI. took place on December 14 of the same year. He received his episcopal ordination on January 3, 1790 in the chapel of the seminary of St. Sulpice in Paris, the nuncio in France, Archbishop Antonio Dugnani ; Co - consecrators were Jean-Baptiste-Charles-Marie de Beauvais , former Bishop of Senez , and Charles de La Font de Savines , Bishop of Viviers .
After the diocese of La Rochelle was abolished by the civil constitution of the clergy , de Coucy said goodbye to the clergy and people of the diocese on July 27, 1791 with a pastoral letter and withdrew into private life. From 1797 to 1801 he lived in exile in Spain. However , he did not resign himself to the diocese of La Rochelle until 1816 after he had prospects of being appointed Archbishop of Reims. However, his enthronement was delayed by the resistance that accompanied the Concordat of 1817, so that he was finally able to actually take possession of the archbishopric in 1821.
He died almost three years after his enthronement as Archbishop of Reims.
