Antonio Dugnani
Antonio Dugnani (born June 18, 1748 in Milan , † October 17, 1818 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Dugnani, son of an aristocratic family in Milan, was ordained a priest on September 21, 1771 and became consultor of the Congregation for Rites in November 1775 .
Pope Pius VI appointed him on February 14, 1785 Apostolic Nuncio in France and two months later titular Archbishop of Rhodus . He was ordained bishop on June 12, 1785 by Cardinal Carlo Rezzonico the Younger . During this time Dugnani saw the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, against whose ideas he was against. He affirmed his position in a letter to the French clergy dated April 13, 1791. In May of the same year he had to leave Paris and returned first to Milan and then to Rome the following year.
He was from Pius VI. on February 21, 1794 elevated to cardinal with the titular church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina , he also became a member of several cardinal congregations . On June 1 of the same year, Cardinal Dugnani was appointed papal legate in Romagna . In 1796, after the French advance, he had to leave the capital Ravenna for the first time and finally leave the following year. He took from 1799 to 1800 at the conclave in part, that Pius VII. Dialed. In 1801 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prassede . Pius VII appointed him Prefect of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide on October 31, 1804 , and Cardinal Dugnani held this post until May 1805. Between 1806 and 1808 he was one of the cardinals whom Pius VII was accommodating and moderate towards French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to convince. He maintained this attitude, in contrast to his earlier positions, even after the French occupation of Rome. He himself was deported to Paris in 1809 and was only able to return to Rome after Napoleon's fall in 1814. In March 1816 he became a cardinal subdean. Cardinal Dugnani was Prefect of the Apostolic Signature from 1817 until his death in October 1818 . He was buried in the Roman church of Santa Maria in Vallicella .
