Giovanni Simeoni
Giovanni Simeoni (born July 12, 1816 in Paliano in the diocese of Palestrina , Italy , † January 14, 1892 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Simeoni first attended the seminary of Palestrina, later the Collegio Romano in Rome and studied theology and canon law at the University of La Sapienza in Rome. His studies were financed by the Colonna aristocratic family , for whom his father worked as a majordomo .
In 1839 he was ordained a priest , in 1857 he was given the title of " House Prelate of His Holiness ". From 1868 to 1875 he was secretary of the Congregation Propaganda Fide .
On March 5, 1875, Pope Pius IX appointed him titular Archbishop of Chalcedon and on March 16, 1875 to the papal assistant throne . He was ordained bishop on April 4th of the same year by Cardinal Alessandro Franchi ; Co- consecrators were Edward Henry Howard of Norfolk , Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Frascati , and Archbishop Pietro de Villanova Castellacci , Vice-Lord of the City of Rome. On the same day the Pope appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Spain with the powers of a Legatus a latere .
As early as March 15, 1875, Pope Giovanni Simeoni had created in the consistory as cardinal priest to cardinal in pectore , this was published on September 17, 1875. The Pope awarded him the cardinal's hat and the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli on March 15, 1877. From December 18, 1876 until the death of Pope Pius IX. on February 7, 1878, Simeoni held the office of cardinal secretary of state , at the same time he was prefect of the apostolic palace and administrator of the papal properties. Pius IX named Giovanni Simeoni as his executor . Cardinal Simeoni participated in the conclave of 1878, which Pope Leo XIII. chose. The new Pope confirmed him as prefect of the apostolic palace and administrator of the papal properties. From March 5, 1878, Giovanni Cardinal Simeoni was Prefect of the Congregation Propaganda Fide , a position he held until his death. From March 27, 1885 to January 15, 1886 he was also treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals .
Giovanni Simeoni died in Rome on January 14, 1892. He was buried there on the Campo Verano . He bequeathed his considerable art collection to the Pope.
