Montegranaro (in the local dialect Montegrana or Mongrana ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 12,785 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Fermo in Marche . The municipality is located about 45 kilometers south of Ancona and about 13 kilometers northwest of Fermo . Macerata is about 12 kilometers northwest of Montegranaro. The municipality borders on the province of the same name .
history
Montegranaro was built on the remains of the ancient Roman city of Veregra (or Beregra ). Montegranaro is mentioned for the first time in a deed of donation from Farfa Abbey . The name comes from the Latin Mons Granarius (grain hill) and means the fertile landscape.
Sports
With the Sutor Basket Montegranaro there is a professional basketball team that also played in the highest basketball league in Italy, the Lega Basket Serie A , in 2006/2007 .
Economy and Transport
Montegranaro is an important location for the Italian shoe industry. North of Montegranaro, Strada Statale 77 runs along the Chienti . There is no train station in Montegranaro. The Civitanova Marche-Montegranaro train station is located in Civitanova Marche (about 10 kilometers northeast of Montegranaro). Until 1955 there was still a connection to the tram to Civitanova Marche.
