Giovanni Conti (born November 17, 1882 in Montegranaro , † March 1, 1957 in Rome ) was an Italian lawyer, publicist and politician ( Partito Repubblicano Italiano ).

biography

Giovanni Conti joined the Republican Party of Italy in 1898 , which had been founded three years earlier. In 1910 he was elected to the Executive Commission at the 10th Congress of the Party in Florence .

Two years later he moved to Rome and joined the party leadership. From 1916 he took part in the First World War. In 1921 he founded the party newspaper La Voce Repubblicana and the newspaper of the youth federation L'Alba Repubblicana . In the same year he was elected to parliament and confirmed in office in 1924.

After the consolidation of fascism, he stayed in Rome. As a prominent anti-fascist, he was the target of violent attacks; his law firm was vandalized, he himself was monitored from 1926 to 1943 and imprisoned several times. In the run-up to Hitler's state visit to Italy in May 1938, anti-fascists were arrested preventively, including Conti. The political police, reporting to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, kept files on him.

After the fall of Mussolini and the end of the German occupation of Rome, Giovanni Conti began reorganizing the Republican Party in Rome in 1943/44, but soon came into conflict with Randolfo Pacciardi .

Conti was appointed senator in 1948 and retired from politics in 1950.
