Sant'Elpidio a Mare [santel'piːdjo a 'maːre] is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 17,181 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Fermo in Marche . The municipality is located about 9 kilometers north of Fermo and borders the province of Macerata . The Adriatic Sea is 9 kilometers east of Sant'Elpidio a Mare.

history

The settlement was originally called Cluana . When the community acquired the relics of St. Elpidius in the 7th century, the name of the saint was adopted. According to a legend, an apparition of a saint is said to have come about, which saved the place from being plundered by the Lombards .

The Strada Statale 77 runs north of the municipality, and the A14 autostrada to the east .
