Company history

Tod's retail store in Hong Kong

In the early 1900s, the shoemaker Filippo Della Valle founded a small shoe factory in Marche . His son Dorino continued to run the company and was already exporting shoes to North America. With the entry of Dorino's son Diego Della Valle (born December 30, 1953), who dropped out of his law degree and is still the main shareholder of the company, the family business finally developed into an international industrial company from the end of the 1970s. Diego Della Valle came up with the internationally easy-to-pronounce name JP Tod’s for the company in 1978 and shortened the brand name to Tod’s at the end of the 1980s .

A high-quality, elegant leather moccasin with rubber studs on the sole, which was modeled on the driving shoes developed in Italy in the 1950s for automobile sport, became the company's best seller . The fact that in the 1980s, among others, the Fiat heir Giovanni Agnelli with Tod's shoes and in the 1990s Princess Diana with a Tod's handbag (model D-Bag ) were shown in the media, contributed significantly to the brand's reputation at. In the 1980s, Della Valle also launched the brands Hogan (athletic shoes) and Fay (clothing).

Today Tod's SpA is the holding company of a group that asserts itself with the brands Tod’s and Hogan among the most important luxury shoe and luxury leather goods manufacturers and wholesalers. The company's headquarters are in Sant'Elpidio a Mare . Diego della Valle went public in 2000, selling 25% of his shares in the family business. As of late 2010, Della Valle held nearly 57% of Tod's SpA's share capital, having recently sold $ 300 million in shares. Della Valle also holds almost 20% of the shares in the American luxury department store chain Saks Fifth Avenue , which his father had already supplied with shoes.

Brand portfolio

  • Today, the Tod’s brand is best known for handmade bags and moccasins with 133 rubber nubs ( gommino ) as the sole. The model of the Italian shoe brand Car Shoe (founded in 1963, part of the Prada Group since 2001 ) served as a model for Tod's moccasin with the pimples , but Diego Della Valle marketed his product better. He gave a pair of the moccasins to prominent personalities. The shoes on the feet of celebrities were seen more and more often in various newspapers, which has contributed to the high level of brand awareness to this day. Diego Della Valle rediscovered the moccasin and produces it as an elegant, sporty casual shoe. Handbags were added to the portfolio in the 1990s . Leather accessories, sunglasses and, on a small scale, an outerwear collection with a focus on leather jackets are also sold under the Tod's brand. In 2006, the American fashion designer Derek Lam was hired as creative director. Lam left the company in 2012. As of 2010 there were around 170 Tod's stores worldwide, 115 of which were owned by Tod's SpA. In addition, there have been around 20 company-owned DEV boutiques in Italy since 2002 , which exclusively sell the brands Tod's, Hogan and Fay.
  • Hogan is a shoe brand launched by Diego della Valle in 1986 for women, men and children, which is known for its sportier line ( sneakers ) and under whose names it also sells handbags, jackets and sunglasses. At the end of 2010, the designer Karl Lagerfeld was engaged for a design cooperation for women's shoes, fashion and bags under the name Hogan by Karl Lagerfeld , which was continued in the following seasons. As of 2010 there were around 20 Hogan stores worldwide.
  • The fashion label Fay , which was created in the mid-1980s, has specialized in jackets and coats, although complete clothing collections are offered for women, men and children. The brand is known for its design based on fire service jackets. There are separate Fay shops in Rome and Milan.
  • The French brand Roger Vivier was established by the shoe designer Roger Vivier (1907-1998) in the early 1950s. Among other things, he created shoes for Christian Dior until the 1960s . Della Valle bought the brand in 2003, employed the Italian designer Bruno Frisoni and successfully relaunched the traditional brand with shoes and handbags , under whose name there are retail stores worldwide.

In addition, Diego Della Valle acquired the Italian-French brand Elsa Schiaparelli outside the Tod's group in 2006 , which had not been on the market since 1952. In July 2012, a Schiaparelli boutique opened its doors on Place Vendôme in Paris .

other activities

In 2010, Diego Della Valle promised the city government of Rome to participate financially in the urgently needed restoration of the Colosseum , but withdrew this offer at short notice in January 2012 after his plan to advertise his company with this project was attacked by the public. Ultimately, however, he will participate in the restoration with 25 million euros. A final court ruling on the sponsorship deal is expected on January 29, 2013.

From 2012 the company Tod's SpA was added to the foundation board of La Scala in Milan . This is accompanied by financial support for the opera house of more than 5 million euros.
