Grottazzolina ( La Grotta in the local dialect) is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 3289 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Fermo in Marche . The municipality is located about 10.5 kilometers southwest of Fermo , about 24 kilometers south-southeast of Macerata and about 28 kilometers north of Ascoli Piceno . The Tenna flows north of Grottazzolina .
history
As a fiefdom, the community has been traceable since the 8th century AD. At that time it belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Farfa in what is now Fara Sabina in Latium. In the meantime it came to the city of Fermo as a dependent area. Under Pope Innocent III. the community got its current name after Count Azzolino .
The former station on the narrow-gauge line (950 mm) from Porto San Giorgio to Amandola was closed in 1956.
