Happy Endings is an American sitcom directed by David Caspe and produced between 2010 and 2013 by ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television for the US broadcaster ABC . It is about the lives of six old friends in Chicago whose friendship is put to the test after the couple who brought them together split up. In the US, the series started on April 13, 2011 with a double episode on ABC. The German-language first broadcast began on March 18, 2012 on Comedy Central Germany .

The wedding of Dave and Alex should it be glücklichster day, but she lets him stand before the altar. He has been single again since he was left standing in front of the altar by his fiancée Alex. He tries to get over his ex with some affairs with not very intelligent women. His other friends also help him. He quits his old office job and fulfills a dream with his own bar. He has lived with Max since the separation from Alex.
Alex Kerkovich
She is Dave's fiancée, who left him standing in front of the altar. She regrets leaving it there so easily. She was afraid to admit her doubts about her love for Dave. Most of all, she didn't want to hurt his feelings. She enjoys going on double dates and having a drink with her friend Penny. She runs her own womenswear boutique called Xela in downtown Chicago.
Jane Kerkovich-Williams
She is Alex's older sister, a control freak, and married to Brad. Although she is not actually ready for a child, she plans to start a family with Brad and, together with her husband, detoxifies their bodies from alcohol and meat as a pre-pregnancy measure. She met Brad through the help of Dave in college.
Brad Williams
He is Jane's husband and always does everything she says, even if he is often not enthusiastic about her ideas. He works for a large Chicago investment firm and is good friends with Dave and Max. He met Jane through the help of Dave in college.
Max Blum
He's been friends with Dave and Brad since college. Although he is openly gay , his divorced parents only recently found out about it. Max is single and unemployed and loves playing video games at home. He lets Dave live with him after his separation from Alex. He is also a minister of a non-denominational Christian church, although he is himself a Jew.
Penny Hartz
She is single and desperately looking for the right man. She has been friends with Dave, Alex and Jane since high school. Max had used her as a model friend to his parents since college. She has had feelings for Dave for a number of years, but as a good friend she had always held them back. She works for a public relations firm and prides herself on being the hippest person in her office.

In January 2010, ABC announced the production of a pilot episode. It was written by David Caspe and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo . The series is produced by ABC Studios , Sony Pictures Television and FanFare Productions. Jamie Tarses , Jonathan Groff , Anthony and Joe Russo are executive producers , while Prentice Penny is producing . The casting started in February 2010 with the signing of Damon Wayans, Jr. as Jane's husband Brad, who does whatever she tells him to do. Casey Wilson next joined the cast as Penny. Shortly thereafter, Eliza Coupe and Adam Pally were enlisted, with Coupe playing Jane, Alex's controlling sister and wife of Brad, and Pally playing Max, Dave's best friend and roommate. Elisha Cuthbert was later cast as Alex, Dave's fiancée, who lets him stand in front of the altar. The last actor to be recruited was Zachary Knighton , who takes on the leading role of Dave.

After filming of the pilot episode was completed in Los Angeles in late April 2010 , ABC announced a month later, after viewing the new series, that it had ordered Happy Endings as a series and ordered thirteen episodes. When the start dates were announced, the series was given a start date in the so-called midseason. Although the ratings for the first season were mediocre, ABC extended the series for a second season and initially ordered thirteen episodes. After the ratings of the second season were higher than the first, ABC commissioned six more scripts in October 2011. At the beginning of November, the second season was increased to 22 episodes. In May 2012, ABC was extended by a 22-part third season.

After the series was initially broadcast two days a week from January, then postponed to Friday and was also unable to convince there, ABC announced the discontinuation of the series in May 2013. Since ABC was suspected of being canceled in advance, the cable broadcaster USA Network expressed interest in taking over the series in April 2013. After three weeks, however, USA also decided against ordering a fourth season of the series. Although had Sony Pictures Television intensive search for a new partner for the sequel to Happy Endings. However, since the actors' contracts expired on June 30, 2013 and the future of the series was not clear, they were not extended.

Post-processing

In the sixth episode of the first season, when Dave says, “His bin Laden ”, he refers to the mouse he's trying to catch and then starts to joke: “Jessica bin Laden, a super hot Arab girl that I'm with went to college. ”This episode, taped before Osama bin Laden's death , ABC silently aired at the end and completely removed the scene from the episode's online streams. The episode was then broadcast in its original version in Canada.

The ninth episode of the first season originally contained a kiss between Max and Ian and was featured on several promotional images released prior to airing. He was eventually removed from the episode before it aired. David Caspe stated that the kiss was cut out as a purely creative decision and that there was no pressure from the broadcaster to remove this homosexual content.

After Happy Endings was ordered as a series in May 2010, ABC announced a start date for the so-called midseason. It finally started on April 13, 2011 with a double episode. The pilot episode , which was broadcast after a new episode of Cougar Town , reached around 7.30 million viewers and the subsequent second episode then 5.70 million viewers and a rating of 2.8 and 2.3 in the advertising-relevant target group of 18–49 year olds. Ten further episodes were then broadcast in double episodes and deviating from the production sequence until May 25, 2011. The previously unseen sixth episode was first seen on August 24, 2011 on ABC. The first season was watched by an average of 5.17 million people, making it 112th among all series broadcast that season.

The second season was now broadcast from September 28, 2011 behind a new episode of Modern Family . The 21st episode was shown as the finale of the second season on April 4, 2012, while the 22nd episode produced for the second season was aired during the third season. The broadcast of the third season began on Tuesday October 23, 2012 in the comedy block with Apartment 23 . Shortly after the turn of the year 2013, one episode each ran for two weeks on Tuesday and one on Sunday. At the end of January 2013, ABC took the series out of the program for two months and continued the broadcast on March 29, 2013 on Fridays in double episodes. The third season finale was shown on May 3, 2013.

Germany

In Germany, the broadcast of the first and second season including the episode KickBall (original title: KickBall 2: The Kickening ) could be seen between March 18 and October 9, 2012 on Comedy Central Germany .

International

Internationally, the series is also broadcast in Canada by Citytv , in New Zealand by TV2 , in Latin America by Sony Entertainment Television , in Norway by TVNorge , in Belgium by Prime , in Great Britain by E4 and in Serbia , Estonia and Portugal by the local Fox Life - Broadcast offshoots.

Publications

The first season appeared in the USA and Canada with the region code 1 on September 13, 2011. A publication in Australia and Great Britain has not yet existed. A German-language version has not yet appeared either.

The complete series is also available for a fee through iTunes , Amazon Instant Video and Hulu Plus . The latest episodes in the United States can also be viewed free of charge on the ABC website and on Hulu .

criticism

The first season of the series has in Metacritic a Metascore of 57/100 based on 21 reviews. On TV.com , the series is rated 6.4 / 10 based on 505 votes, and on IMDb.com it is rated 7.8 / 10 based on 1,815 votes. The series was initially heavily criticized and compared with other similar "relationship itcoms" that premiered earlier in the season, such as Perfect Couples , Mad Love , Traffic Light and Friends with Benefits . It also has comparisons to the popular sitcom Friends . Meanwhile, the series received better reviews while it aired, with some having to admit that it has gotten better and better since the pilot episode.
