Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi (born July 28, 1818 in Rome ; † October 17, 1875 ibid) was an Italian clergyman, bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from a patrician family and was the eldest of the five children of Pietro Nobili Vitelleschi (1785-1842), Marchese von Rigatti and his wife Maddalena Ricci Paracciani (1790-1842). Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi was a great-grand-nephew of Cardinal Urbano Paracciani on his mother's side, and he was related through his mother to the Cardinals Niccola Paracciani Clarelli and Francesco Ricci Paracciani . Other cardinals from the Nobili Vitelleschi family were Giovanni Vitelleschi , Roberto de 'Nobili, and the pseudocardinal Bartolomeo Vitelleschi . Another family member was Muzio Vitelleschi SJ, who was the sixth general of the Society of Jesus from 1615 to 1645 . His sister Virginia Vitelleschi married the Marchese Girolamo di Nobili around 1600 . The brother of Virginia and Muzio Vitelleschi, the last male descendant of the Vitelleschi, died unmarried and childless, and in order to get the name Vitelleschi, the descendants of Virginia and Girolamo di Nobili called themselves Nobili Vitelleschi from around 1623 .

Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi attended the Collegio San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome and then studied at the Archigymnasium of Rome, today's University of La Sapienza , where he obtained a license in utroque iure on September 24, 1841 . As early as December 12, 1837, he had been appointed surplus papal secret chamberlain , and on April 6, 1839, he became a canon at the Vatican Basilica . He was ordained priest on March 27, 1841 by Cardinal Giacomo Giustiniani , Bishop of Albano . On October 11, 1841, he became papal house prelate and held a number of other curial offices in the following years . From March 18 to December 10, 1852 he was an auditor of the Roman Rota , and from June 21, 1852 to 1854 he was also a cleric of the Apostolic Chamber .

On June 19, 1856, Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi was elected titular archbishop of Seleucia Pieria . He received his episcopal ordination on July 6, 1856 in the chapel of the Apostolic Palace on the Quirinal in Rome by Pope Pius IX. ; Co- consecrators were the Curia Bishops Alessandro Macioti and Giuseppe Palermo OSA , papal sacristan . Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi rejected an appointment as nuncio in Naples . On June 8, 1858 he became secretary of the Congregation for Ecclesiastical Immunity and on June 18 of the same year papal assistant to the throne . From 1861 to 1864 he was a member of the State Council. On December 21, 1863 he was transferred to the episcopal seat of Osimo e Cingoli with the personal title of archbishop . However, since the Italian government refused to give its consent, he had to have the diocese administered by vicars general. On August 24, 1871, he became secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars . As Bishop of Osimo e Cingoli, he resigned on November 20, 1871 and was again called to the titular seat of Seleucia on November 24, 1871 .

Pope Pius IX appointed Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi in the consistory of March 15, 1875 as cardinal in pectore , this was published on September 17, 1875 with the appointment of cardinal priest and on September 23 of the same year Pius IX conferred. him San Marcello as titular church .
