Alessandro Macioti

Alessandro Macioti (born August 29, 1798 in Velletri ; † January 18, 1859 in Rome ) was an Italian curial archbishop .

Life

He was the son of Michelangelo Macioti (1770-1852) and came from an influential family from Velletri. His uncle Geraldo Macioti (1768–1837) was auxiliary bishop in the suburbicarian diocese of Velletri ; another uncle, Vincenzo Macioti (1775-1840) was bishop of Amelia and later of Ferentino .

Alessandro Macioti received his doctorate theologiae in 1818 and was ordained a priest on April 21, 1821 . He became canon of the cathedral of Velletri and lecturer at the local seminary . Pope Gregory XVI appointed him on February 10, 1831 to the secret chamberlain . On August 20, 1832, he entered the service of the Curia as the papal house prelate . He became canon of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and, on August 30, 1832, coadjutor of the Pro- Datar of His Holiness Attone Benigni , to whom, after his death (December 29, 1835), he held the dual function of Pro-Datar and Secretary of the Congregation for the Sanctuary of Loreto succeeded .

Pope Gregory XVI elevated him on September 26, 1845 titular Archbishop of Colossae . The episcopal ordination donated him on October 5th of the same year Cardinal Vicar Costantino Patrizi Naro ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giovanni Francesco Cometti Rossi and Carlo Gigli , Bishop of Tivoli . Alessandro Macioti was sent to Lucerne as Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland. There he was confronted with the Sonderbund War , during the course of which Macioti exposed himself through speeches and was therefore called back to Rome in 1848. Pope Pius IX appointed him on June 6, 1850, Coadjutor of the Apostolic Almsman , on June 21, Papal Assistant to the Throne , and later as Consultor of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, and as Assessor (Secretary) of the Holy Office . On May 1, 1856, he finally became a canon of the Vatican Basilica .
