Giovanni Brunelli

Giovanni Brunelli (born June 23, 1795 in Rome , † February 21, 1861 in Osimo ) was a papal diplomat and cardinal .

Life

Brunelli studied philosophy, theology and civil and canon law in Rome. He was ordained a priest on December 21, 1817 . In the 1820s he was secretary to Cardinals Belisario Cristaldi and Luigi Ercolani . He accompanied the cardinals to the conclave in 1823 and 1829 and described the events in a diary. Pope Gregory XVI appointed him consultor of the Congregation for Extra-Church Affairs in 1833. In 1834 he also became a professor of canonical texts at La Sapienza University . In the following years Brunelli was undersecretary and secretary of various cardinal congregations before he became consultor of the Holy Office in 1843 .

Gregory XVI. appointed him on May 23, 1845 titular Archbishop of Thessalonica . The episcopal ordination donated him two days later, Cardinal Secretary of State Luigi Lambruschini . Co-consecrators were the later Cardinal Gaetano Baluffi and Francesco Brigante Colonna , titular archbishop of Damascus . On June 27, 1845, the Pope appointed Brunelli as Papal Assistant to the Throne . In the same year he was to be appointed Apostolic Delegate in Spain , but due to diplomatic conflicts, the appointment was made under the new Pope Pius IX. in April 1847. After Brunelli had restored diplomatic relations between the Papal States and Spain, he became apostolic nuncio the following year . In his role, Brunelli played a leading role in the negotiations that led to the Concordat with Spain in March 1851 .

Cardinal Secretary of State Giacomo Antonelli wanted to send him on another diplomatic mission to Great Britain and Ireland, but Brunelli declined for personal reasons and stayed in Spain until September 1853. In the consistory of March 15, 1852 Pius IX. He was admitted to the College of Cardinals in pectore , and his appointment as Cardinal Priest of Santa Cecilia was announced on March 7, 1853. Cardinal Brunelli became a member of several cardinal congregations, on June 23, 1854 he became prefect of the study congregation . In the same year he represented the Pope at the Synod of Bishops, which proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception . On September 18, 1856, Pius IX appointed. Cardinal Brunelli as Bishop of Osimo e Cingoli , with the personal title of Archbishop .

He died in February 1861 and was buried in Osimo Cathedral.
