Luigi Ercolani (born October 17, 1758 in Foligno , † December 10, 1825 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

biography

He was born the son of Ascanio Ercolani and Lucrezia b. Cirocchi and attended the Accademia dei Nobili Ecclesiastici (seminar for nobles) in Rome. 1796 Luigi Ercolani entered the government service of the Papal States a. In 1814 he was promoted to treasurer of the Apostolic Chamber (papal financial authority) and in the same year became papal house prelate . He was a member of the clergy but was not ordained a priest.

Ercolani was elevated to cardinal on March 8, 1816 by Pope Pius VII in pectore . After his name had been published on July 22, 1816, he received the title Deaconry of San Marco on September 23, 1816 as a cardinal deacon . On April 14, 1817, he was appointed cardinal priest ; he must have been ordained priest beforehand .

In 1817 he became Cardinal Protector of the Carmelite Order , in 1818 Commendatar Abbot of the Farfa Monastery and the Monastery of San Salvatore Maggiore in Concerviano , in 1819 financial administrator of the Propaganda Fide Missionary Congregation and the Roman College . The cardinal took part in the conclave of 1823 , in which Pope Leo XII. was chosen.

In the last years of his life he suffered from progressive paralysis, died in 1825 and was buried in his titular church.
