Gaetano Baluffi

Gaetano Baluffi (born March 28, 1788 in Ancona , † November 11, 1866 in Imola ) was an Italian bishop and curial cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Gaetano Baluffi was the son of Pietro Baluffi and his wife Paola Micheletti and came from a wealthy Camerino family . As a young man he studied philosophy , theology and law at the Seminaro-Collegio , the seminary in Ancona , and was ordained a priest on March 9, 1811 .

On September 2, 1820 , he received his doctorate in civil and canon law at the University of Fano to the Doctor iuris utriusque .

As a chaplain and priest, he worked as a canon at the Cathedral of Ancona . At the same time he taught rhetoric as a professor at universities and seminaries, was director of the city's high school and wrote several non-fiction books on theology. In 1824 he was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Ancona , an office which he held until 1834.

On July 29, 1833, Baluffi was appointed Bishop of Bagnoregio ; He received the episcopal ordination on August 18, 1833 by Cardinal Carlo Odescalchi in Rome . A year later, on December 19, 1834, Baluffi rose to be personal advisor to Pope Gregory XVI. on. This sent Baluffi on September 9, 1836 as Internuntius to Nueva Granada , today's Colombia . He was to represent the Holy See in all South American states as Internuntius until June 30, 1842, the date on which he left Bogotá for Italy again, with the exception of Brazil .

On January 27, 1842, Baluffi had been appointed Archbishop of Camerino . His appointment as secretary of the Vatican Congregation for Bishops and Religious on April 22, 1845 went hand in hand with the elevation to titular Archbishop of Perge , but a year later, on September 21, 1846, he moved to the diocese of Imola as pastor .

On December 21, 1846, Pope Pius IX took in his first consistory to the College of Cardinals . On June 14, 1847 he received the cardinal's hat and the appointment as cardinal priest of the titular church Santi Marcellino e Pietro .

Cardinal Baluffi died at the age of 78 and was buried in the city of Imola cemetery.
