Anton Maria Schwartz (born February 28, 1852 in Baden near Vienna , † September 15, 1929 in Vienna ) was a Catholic priest and founder of the Kalasantines .

Life

His real name was Anton Schwartz . He was a choirboy at Heiligenkreuz Abbey and studied at the Schottengymnasium in Vienna. In 1869 he entered the Piarist Order in Krems , soon left the order and entered the Vienna seminary . After studying theology , he was ordained a priest on July 25, 1875 by Cardinal Joseph Othmar von Rauscher and chose Maria as his middle name. He was initially a chaplain in Marchegg and from 1879 hospital chaplain to the Sisters of Mercy in Vienna. Sister Magdalena Kühtreiber made him aware of the plight of the workers there. In 1882 he founded a Catholic apprentice association .

From 1886 onwards, Schwartz devoted himself entirely to pastoral care for apprentices . He opened an apprentice asylum home and founded a community called Liebeswerk vom St. Josef Calasanctius . In 1888 he created an office that placed apprenticeships free of charge. On November 24, 1889, the Congregation for Christian Workers of St. Josef Kalasanz from the Mother of God , called Kalasantiner for short.

He set up several day care centers, which he called boys' oratorios , advocated a work-free Sunday, the eight-hour day, apprentice leave, unions , humane treatment and social security . He also took part in several strikes . For him, in addition to religious formation, the education of young workers and apprentices was important.

Until his death he led the order, but did not find the recognition and understanding that he would have wished for. The Viennese Archbishop Anton Joseph Gruscha , who was very open to the problems of the workers, saw Father Schwartz as a competitor for a long time as General President of the Kolping Society .

It was not until 1939 that the Holy See approved the Kalasantine Order.

In 1936, Pater-Schwartz-Gasse in Vienna's Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (15th district) was named after him.
