Sigismund Anton Graf von Hohenwart SJ (* May 2, 1730 in Gerlachstein , Krain ; † June 30, 1820 in Vienna ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Trieste from 1791 to 1794 and Bishop of St. Pölten from 1794 to 1803 . From 1792 to 1803 he was also Apostolic Field Vicar . From 1803 to 1820 he was Prince Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Vienna .

Life

He entered the Jesuit order in 1746 , studied theology in Graz , was a professor in Trieste and Laibach and completed his theology studies in 1758. In 1759 he was ordained a priest . From 1761 he taught at the Theresian Academy in Vienna and from 1778 was the teacher of the future Emperor Franz II and his brothers in Florence . In 1791 he became Bishop of Trieste and in 1794 Bishop of St. Pölten . He was ordained bishop on October 23, 1791 by the Bishop of Laibach, Michel Leopold Brigido von Marenfels and Bresoviz . From 1792 to 1803 he was also Apostolic Field Vicar .

On April 29, 1803, his former pupil, Emperor Franz II, appointed him Prince Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Vienna, with papal confirmation on June 20.

He was a charitable and learned prince of the church and made many visitations in his diocese. He endeavored to ensure that the alumni in the seminary were well trained and in 1805 had the spa house, in which the priest students were accommodated, increased. He promoted the admission of Redemptorists and Mechitarists in Vienna and supported Klemens Maria Hofbauer .

He was an opponent of Napoleon and was reluctant to sign a pastoral letter in 1809 urging priests to return to their parishes. On March 11, 1810, he performed the church wedding of Maria-Luise with Napoleon in the Augustinian Church , who was represented by Archduke Karl .

He is buried in the bishop 's vault of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.
